Hello Brierwood Neighbors, Please don't kill the black snakes! I have noticed a lack of black snakes recently. Black snakes are non-poisonous! They are desirable in our neighborhood, because they eat small rodents such as moles, mice and rats, and other bothersome pests. Please everyone, take the time to get educated as to which snakes are helpful and which are harmful. Most of our Florida snakes are non-poisonous. Almost all the poisonous snakes are pit vipers, which means they have arrow-shaped heads to store their venom. One exception is the coral snake which is brightly striped and easily identifiable. The biggest threat in this general area would be rattlesnakes, which have rattles on their tails. Especially if you are out toward the beaches, or in the woods, keep a lookout for these. Do brush up online for pics of poisonous snakes in Florida, so you can identify them for yourself. However, the main subject here is black snakes - which are our friends. The primary black snake found in our neighborhood is the black racer. These snakes will assist with pest control for your lawn and garden. They may come out to get a little sun, but basically they will shy away if they see you. Let the black snakes live! They help preserve the balance of nature. With as much water as there is all around us, there will always be rodents and other pests that need to be controlled. That is why these snakes are nice to have around. There are also garter snakes and other nonpoisonous snakes which are desirable and should be protected. But if you are ever fortunate enough to have an indigo snake as a tenant, you should definitely welcome, guard, and make them feel at home! They eat pesky vermin, have been known to even eat venomous snakes! and another sweet fact about indigo snakes is that they mate for life. Interestingly, they also just happen to be on the endangered list, so do not recklessly go after them, or you could be fined.
While we are on the subject of useful creatures, let me mention the Possum - Opossum, whatever. Possums give tremendous assistance to our community! They are marsupials which bear live young and carry them in their pouch. Possums are the Only marsupial indigenous to No. America. They are not aggressive, but pretend to be dead when frightened (playing possum.) If you sneak up on them, they may bare their teeth, however they don't attack. These animals do not get rabies or Lyme disease, but they Do eat Thousands of Ticks! (up to 4,000 in one week!) They will even eat roaches, slugs, beetles and other garden pests and won't tear up your flowers or veggies to do it. Possums are also good at other "clean up" jobs in the neighborhood, mainly consuming dead animals. These animals are very hardy and good at surviving adversity.
So if you see one looking ragged, maybe this sad looking possum is simply recuperating from being injured. I used to see possums around here pretty frequently. Let's hope
there are still some left to protect, since they, too, are needed in the grand scheme of things!
I hope this is rewarding information for everyone. Our environment needs to be protected in many ways, one of which is to keep the natural order of needful creatures. Thank you for your help in making our world a better place.
